Eighth Grade Eligibility

If parents or students have questions about the eligibility requirements, they should talk to the student's counselor well before an upcoming activity. Don't wait -- know your eligibility.

Eligibility Rules for the Class of 2021

The eligible rules are different this year, due to the remote-learning environment.

All 8th grade Palms students will move on to high school, but students must meet qualifications in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.

The requirements are as follows:

  • Students must return iPads and all textbooks or Library books and pay any outstanding cafeteria fees. Disposable workbooks (the ones students write in) should not be returned, even if they are unused.
  • Students must have earned 50 or more credits during their 8th grade year. Students earn 5 credits for each class in each semester if they earned a mark of D or better. In most cases, this means to earn at least 50 credits they must have a maximum of 2 failing marks for the year.

Exceptions to the 50-credit rule:

  • If a student earned an F in a class in the Fall semester but raises it to a C or better in the Spring semester, they get the full 10 credits for the year.
  • Students in highly accelerated math (ACC Algebra) earn 10 credits for the year if they pass in both semesters, and no credits otherwise.

Refer to progress reports for class marks. You can also email the 8th grade counselor to assistance.
