Music Program

Palms students may take instrumental music classes as electives, including beginners who have never played an instrument before, those with some experience, and those who take outside lessons.

Palms has four instrumental music classes:

There is also an after-school Jazz Band.

Parents and students are treated to many musical concerts during the school year, from the Pops Concert in October to the Instrumental Spring Concert in May.

For the schedule of performances see the School Calendar and the Concerts page.

Instrumental music classes are not available to students in the Modern Media and Communications Magnet, since they have their own sepaerate set of electives.

Learning to Play

Playing music can be challenging, enjoyable, and exciting for students, as they learn to read music, use proper hand positions and embouchures (mouth positions), be part of an ensemble, and express themselves through music.

Some students bring their own instruments, and some borrow free school instruments that are shared between class periods. Wind players always get individual mouthpieces,

Audition Information

If you would like to learn how to play an instrument and how to read music, sign up for Winds & Percussion or Strings. No audition is required.

If you already know how to play a Band or Orchestra instrument and can already read music, you are encouraged to audition to be part of the Palms Band or Orchestra. To schedule your audition, email Ms. Jones.

For more information, email Ms. Jones.
